Understanding the Bible<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Bible is God’s written revelation of His will to humanity. Its central theme is salvation through Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

The Bible<\/span> contains 66 books<\/span>, written by 40 authors<\/span>, covering a period of approximately 1600 years.<\/p>\n

The Old Testament was written mostly in Hebrew. About 100 year (or more) before the Christian Era the entire Old Testament was translated into the Greek language. Remember, our English Bible is a translation from these original languages.<\/p>\n

The word “Bible<\/em><\/span>” comes from the Greek word biblos<\/span>, meaning “book.<\/span>”<\/p>\n

The word “testament<\/em><\/span>” means “covenant<\/span>,” or agreement.<\/p>\n

The Old Testament <\/span>is the covenant God made with people about their salvation before Christ came. The Old Testament Books (39):<\/p>\n

– Law<\/strong> (5)
\n– Historical <\/strong>(12)
\n– Poetical <\/strong>(5)
\n– Prophetical <\/strong>(17) [Major (5); Minor (12)]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The New Testament<\/span> is the agreement God made with people about their salvation after Christ came.<\/p>\n

The New Testament was written to reveal to us the character and teaching of Jesus Christ, te mediator of the New Covenant, by at least eight men, four of whom [Mathew,<\/span><\/em> John,<\/span><\/em> Peter<\/em><\/span> and Paul<\/span><\/em>] were apostles; two [Mark <\/span><\/em>and Luke<\/em><\/span>] were companions of the apostles; and two [James <\/span><\/em>and Jude<\/span><\/em>] were brothers of Jesus. The books were written at various times during the second half of the first century.<\/p>\n

The books (27) in the New Testament may be grouped thus:<\/p>\n

– Gospels <\/strong>(4)
\n– History <\/strong>(1)
\n– Prophecy<\/strong> (1)
\n– Epistles <\/strong>(21) [Pauline (13); General (8)]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Old Testament <\/span>begins <\/em>with God<\/span> (Genesis 1:1)
\nThe New Testament<\/span><\/span> begins with Christ<\/span> (Mathew 1:1)<\/p>\n

From Abraham to Christ we have the history of the chosen race.
\nFrom Christ on we have the history of the church.<\/p>\n

In the Old Testament<\/span> we find the covenant of law<\/span>. In the New Testament <\/span>we find the covenant of grace that came through Jesus Christ. One led into the other (Galatians 3:17 – 25).<\/p>\n

– The Old commences what the New completes.
\n– The Old gathers around Mount Sinai – the New around Mount Calvary.
\n-The Old is associated with Moses – The New with Christ (John 1:17)<\/p>\n

The authors<\/span> were kings<\/span> and princesses<\/span>, poets<\/span> and philosophers<\/span>, prophets<\/span> and statesmen<\/span>. Some were learned in all the arts of the times and others were unschooled fishermen. Other books soon are out-of-date, but the Bible spans the century.<\/p>\n
